Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of I Owe You One, an utterly delightful novel about a woman who ditches her dating app for a writer's retreat in Italy--only to find that real love comes with its own filters

"As close to perfect as romantic comedies get。"--Jenny Colgan, New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner

Call Ava romantic, but she thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign。 She believes in feelings, not algorithms。 So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers' retreat in coastal Italy。 She's determined to finish writing the novel she's been fantasizing about, even though it means leaving her close-knit group of friends and her precious dog, Harold, behind。

At the retreat, she's not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information。 When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by "Aria," meets "Dutch," a man who seems too good to be true。 The two embark on a baggage-free, whirlwind love affair, cliff-jumping into gem-colored Mediterranean waters and exploring the splendor of the Italian coast。 Things seem to be perfect for Aria and Dutch。

But then their real identities--Ava and Matt--must return to London。 As their fantasy starts to fade, they discover just how different their personal worlds are。 From food choices to annoying habits to sauna etiquette 。 。 。 are they compatible in anything? And then there's the prickly situation with Matt's ex-girlfriend, who isn't too eager to let him go。 As one mishap follows another, it seems while they love each other, they just can't love each other's lives。 Can they reconcile their differences to find one life together?

Sophie Kinsella did it once again。 She created yet another irresponsible, whiny, selfish, and bossy character。 Ava is a writer, aromatherapist, supportive best friend, and fur Mama to her dog Harold。 What she doesn't have yet, is a relationship with a Man who will love her despite all her flaws。 Then Ava goes to a writing retreat and meets Matt。 However, she and Matt had to hide their true identities during this retreat, and decide to keep dating even after the retreat and their reveal。 Ava and Sophie Kinsella did it once again。 She created yet another irresponsible, whiny, selfish, and bossy character。 Ava is a writer, aromatherapist, supportive best friend, and fur Mama to her dog Harold。 What she doesn't have yet, is a relationship with a Man who will love her despite all her flaws。 Then Ava goes to a writing retreat and meets Matt。 However, she and Matt had to hide their true identities during this retreat, and decide to keep dating even after the retreat and their reveal。 Ava and Matt soon learn they have differing choices, opinions and preferences in many things such as food preferences, art, sports and furniture opinions and even how pets should be treated。 Ava realizes that Matt has a family business and some of his family expects him to do things he doesn't want to do。 Ava tries to convince Matt to let his family know how he feels and it leads to a short split between Ava and Matt。 This gave Ava sometime to go back to Italy and finally finish her story。 After she arrived back to the UK, she went to visit one of her friends。 However, her friend wasn't alone。 Her friend was with their other friends, Matt and his friends as well。 They wanted Ava and Matt back and the only way to do that was to get together。 It's a good story line。 It's just Ava didn't even know anything about Matt or his identity before going to his place。 She cried to Matt that her dog should sleep in the bed with them。 She told Matt to do things he didn't want to do such as take her to his parents house with him, or talk to her about Genevieve。 She whined to Matt that he should sleep in her bed。 She whined that Matt should have told her he was going to Japan which he wasn't。 She even whined to her friends how she walked into the sauna naked with Matt's parents and their friends in swimsuits! She even said she told Matt all about it。 Sophie Kinsella always creates girls as being childish, immature, irresponsible etc。。。。 sometimes it throws the enjoyment of the story off。 。。。more

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review。 Another hilarious adventure by Sophie Kinsella! Ava has so much spunk and Matt has so much。。。。 intrigue! I laughed my way through this one and the crazy hijinks these two go through together as they get to know each other。

This is the first book from Sophie Kinsella that I won't finish。 I'm not particularly invested in either Lead Character。 I also don't believe they have any chemistry or did when they met。 I realize the other 66% of the book is about how they make it together in each others worlds and I'm sure it's comedic and great。。。but, it's very painful and draggy and I can't keep pushing thru。 This is the first book from Sophie Kinsella that I won't finish。 I'm not particularly invested in either Lead Character。 I also don't believe they have any chemistry or did when they met。 I realize the other 66% of the book is about how they make it together in each others worlds and I'm sure it's comedic and great。。。but, it's very painful and draggy and I can't keep pushing thru。 。。。more

This is my least favorite Kinsella book。 I couldn’t relate to the main character for about 80% of the book。 Her reactions were so immature and not relatable, to me at least。 The last few chapters had some unneeded drama, and more closure for the main couple would have been great。 Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this one to a friend。

I didn’t love this book at first, but I really enjoyed the second half and I’m glad I kept going!

Kimberly

Okay so 75% of this book was ridiculous and painful。 I didn’t realize this was the same author as confessions of a shopaholic or that would’ve been my first red flag about absolutely I likable characters。 The ending was good so while it was mostly 2 stars the end gave it 2。5, so I rounded up。 I read it while I had no desk work or else I probably wouldn’t have finished

Kara

Sophie Kinsella never disappoints。 She always gives her readership a perfectly crafted love story。 There’s a protagonist you immediately feel connected to, a group a friends you wish you could hang out with, a conflicted love interest, an antagonist who always gets their comeuppance, personal growth, and this time SK added a dog to the mix。I always enjoy the hilarious inner-dialogue of her main character and you can’t help but laugh-out-loud。 Witty and charming to the end。

I was not a fan of the characters in this story and just overall it is messy and sloppy and all over the place。。。。 I forced myself to finish this book。 There were exactly two chapters out of the entire book that I enjoyed。 Been a fan of this author in the past, but this one was not for me。

Amina

My first time reading a book by the author。 There was some real laugh out loud moments! It fell flat like most comedy/romances do, but definitely entertaining!

The characters couldn’t make it work, they separated as expected and then when they meet again through their intermingled friend groups they’d both grown because of their relationship。 Despite being apart they’d both learned to be a better version of themselves which is actually what they needed to stay together。 I really liked that。 。。。more

I thought the beginning and end were cute but I spent most of the middle begging these characters to just break up already。

Not as funny as many of her previous novels but did raise a couple of laughs。 Wonderfully predictable and another lovably ditsy main character, but reading Sophie Kinsella remains an easy, warm hug。

Great romance if you love getting angry at the main characters and spend the entire book hoping they don’t end up together

I love Sophie Kinsella's work, especially "I Owe You," but the love story felt too rushed between the characters (I mean they barely knew each other & did not care to get know each other later on) and their incompatibility is anything but romantic。 I had high hopes for this one, but I struggled to even get through it。 I love Sophie Kinsella's work, especially "I Owe You," but the love story felt too rushed between the characters (I mean they barely knew each other & did not care to get know each other later on) and their incompatibility is anything but romantic。 I had high hopes for this one, but I struggled to even get through it。 。。。more

Meh。 I liked the premise and the compromises。 But it's a little too pat and not enough character development。 It really leaned on personal quirks for personalities。 Meh。 I liked the premise and the compromises。 But it's a little too pat and not enough character development。 It really leaned on personal quirks for personalities。 。。。more

Tråkig och pinsam。 Två karaktärer som uppenbarligen inte är som gjorda för varann, tror aldrig deras relation kommer att hålla!

I liked this book。 Not as fast moving as her other books but still a good read。

It’s a classic Sophie Kinsella book。 A great relaxing read。 Not my favorite one she’s written but I enjoyed it for a summer poolside book

I was afraid to return to Sophie Kinsella, whose "Shopaholic" books I absolutely devoured in a pre-2009-recession world, which somehow seems even more embarrassing after this pandemic year。 However, this book has all the reasons to love Sophie Kinsella: imperfect characters and so much laughing out loud (actual laughing out loud, like ha-ha-ha and then realizing your laughing at a book by yourself)。 It makes me want to write the words FUN and SILLY in all-caps letters。 And oh, it also helps that I was afraid to return to Sophie Kinsella, whose "Shopaholic" books I absolutely devoured in a pre-2009-recession world, which somehow seems even more embarrassing after this pandemic year。 However, this book has all the reasons to love Sophie Kinsella: imperfect characters and so much laughing out loud (actual laughing out loud, like ha-ha-ha and then realizing your laughing at a book by yourself)。 It makes me want to write the words FUN and SILLY in all-caps letters。 And oh, it also helps that she uses her wit to stab at some tech bros, whom I am of course happy to laugh at。 Anytime。 They turn out to have a heart after all, which is sweet, and only adds to the escapist/feelgood vibe if you live if a world full of techbros who don't always want to make you write FUN in all-caps。 。。。more

Another promising premise (couple meets on an anonymous writing retreat in Italy) that, unfortunately, fell flat for me。 The combination of the couple's differences (discovered once home), their constant bickering, and the insufferable naivety of the heroine made this a hard pass for me。 I thought the audiobook was wrapping up when I discovered that we had a whole two hours to go! The supporting cast is pretty great, so maybe give this one a chance if you're a fan of second chance romances as a Another promising premise (couple meets on an anonymous writing retreat in Italy) that, unfortunately, fell flat for me。 The combination of the couple's differences (discovered once home), their constant bickering, and the insufferable naivety of the heroine made this a hard pass for me。 I thought the audiobook was wrapping up when I discovered that we had a whole two hours to go! Classic Sophie Kinsella。 Just plain fun。 :) But it had a deeper exploration of relationships and what truly makes relationships work, more so than her other novels。

“I’m happier in a lot of ways,” agrees Matt, then adds in a lower voice, “Although not in all ways。 Not all ways”
